LONG FORM ARTISTIC STATEMENT
ACCIDENTAL AIR CITY is at its core an installation art show. Each artist group is invited to create a sculptural environment with which guests will interact. The overall project however will be broader and more complex combing elements of theater, urban exploration and technology that will frame the installation in a medium of fantasy rather than of a gallery.
The installation environment will be suspended out of reach of the floor, a collection of separate sculptural pieces connected by a network of bridges. The floor of the gallery will be dark, entirely empty and ideally flooded in a half inch of water implying the rising flood, that the earth is no longer tenable, forcing the audience upwards into the airship. With the 1784 fantasy airship Minerva as central inspiration with her disparate conglomerated appearance, the concepts and ascetics of the art installations are somewhat limitless. Artists are encouraged to embrace the incoherent and absurd.
The Minerva is a flying machine from the Age of the Enlightenment, when paradigms of tradition and superstition were being replaced by those of individualism and reason that are very much embodied by the concept of human flight. This symbolic meaning may have been as important, if not more, then the practicality of flight for transportation or observation. Man's defiance of god and nature, to define himself as a the master of his own destiny. It could be said that the true heroes of this age were the men of science, however the most famous airship of that time was the creation of a "conjuror"... a magician, an entertainer. The Minerva was a romantic vision unrestrained by practical reality.
What ideas persist into realities? The serene silent Minerva, steered by sail, guided by stars, in pursuit of knowledge, a relic now in the age of machines held aloft my millions of tiny explosions and continuously flaming vortexes of jet fuel. Transporting products, dispensing poison, constructed for profit. Evolution is unsentimental and unromantic, survival is determined by brutal necessity and thin margins. When there's not enough life boats, what ideas persist and which get left behind. If Berlin were flooding physically or philosophically, would you and your ideas be welcomed into the lifeboats of practicality? or more interestingly would you build your own life boat.
Accidental Air Cities encourages artists to produce a model of what a life boat of discarded romanticism might look like. What things would be worth saving even if their weight can not be justified. A trend of hyper overvaluation of property has produced a growing unease among creative people who are relegated to more and more remote fringes, the global urban environment has become equatable to a sinking ship with ever diminishing life boats. This is an art experiment about survival that allows for an exploration of impractical alternatives, an ark of madness. The Aircity does of course suggest ideas of alternative societies but this is not an experiment in traditional utopias of permaculture or egalitarianism, this environment can be unapologetically absurd and whimsical.
What exactly could this Aircity look like? A Flapper (1920's) style floating bar in the sky, bicycle powered rotating Camera Obscura 'belly gun' turret, a bird cage zoo, kinetic sculpture actuated sound machines, pneumatic tubes delivering drinks and messages, a 360 degree walkway encircling the structure, long swaying walkways leading to small rooms, musical rope bridges, large nets that you can jump into to re-enter the carriage from below. This is the abstract and the absurdy of this Earth that you would want to preserve, that the scientists with their infinite efficiency may have forgotten to bring. What of the human will you save for humanity?
The ACCIDENTAL AIR CITY installation will be the culminating location for an immersive theatrical series, where participants are cast into a circuitous adventure set within a subtle narrative and a series of sculptural environments. Audience may be picked up at secret locations, ferried by sculptural junk rafts, travel by home made train cars on defunct rail lines. The narrative is driven by a quest to escape flooding Berlin where audience and cast work together to accumulate fantastic vehicles and components to assemble an airship. The exact details of this guided narrative adventure will be largely determined by the location of the Aircity installation and the input of our theatrical collaborators. The intention is to put the audience in an ideal frame of mind upon arrival. The audience is engaged and participating in their own survival, rather than strolling casually and preoccupied into a gallery.
The audience assists in constructing the last airship and once aboard the installation, narratives will play out around them. An audience member can engage and watch or even participate, or is free to wander and explore on their own. A 360 degree video mapping projection on the gallery walls will simulate lifting off through the raging storm. Other video art airships will pass and interact with the installation.
Accidental Aircity combines the immersion, costumes and narrative of theater with the adventure, mystery and comradery of "adventure art". Physically, it will be visually complex, with the detail and personal artistic expression of an installation show. In practice it will have the fun, freedom of movement and late hours of a party.
